Top 7 Fantasy Novels

These are my top 7and absolute favorite fantasy novels. If you're looking for your next fantasy reads, read on!

1.

The Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. I still remember the first time I picked up the Vampire Academy series. I was a 13 year old, bored junior high school student who was hearing all the craze about twilight, and after deciding I didn't like twilight after reading the first 10 pages, I decided to pick up another vampire book. I quickly devoured the first book and promptly rented out the rest from my school library. Without giving too much away, I can say with confidence that this is probably one of my favourite YA/NA fantasy and is probably what got me into NA fantasy. It is well written, while also having its cliche moments without being too campy. 8 years after picking it up for the first time, I can still recollect everything that occurred in this series - mainly because I have reread it about 10 times. It has an amazing plot, amazing main and side characters, an amazing love story and is just overall well written. The entire series is a must read. Can't recommend this series enough! Rating: 5/5 stars

2.

Lunar Chronicle series by Marissa Meyer. I included the Lunar Chronicles in my list of Top 7 Fictional retellings that you can read here. However, I'll reiterate what I loved about this series. The entire Lunar Chronicles series is based on different fairy tale characters. The first book in the series is Cinder and it's a take on Cinderella but in a Sci-fi/Fantasy world. It's so very original and although I wouldn't really consider it a retelling (because it does its own take and veers away from the Cinderella story) it still has some easter eggs and aspects from the original Cinderella story. The other book in the series are Scarlett (based on Red Riding Hood and my personal favourite), Cress (based on Rapunzel) and Winter (based on Snow White). They're all intertwined and the plot is so intense and has many twists and turns that the series still resonates with me even though I read it 6 years ago. This series was and continues to be an absolute favourite of mine. Rating: 4.5/5 stars

3.

The Fever Series by Karen Moning. Like Vampire Academy, the Fever series is one series that I'll always recommend whenever someone asks me for a NA fantasy series rec. Unlike Vampire Academy, I've only read the Fever series in its entirety once, however the series was one that I enjoyed very much. I loved the main female character, Mac, and it was so easy to relate to her. She didn't start off as a know it all, fighter female character, but rather grew into that role as the series progressed. She came off as naive during the first few novels, and I found that refreshing because truthfully I would act the same way she did if I was ever thrust into a fantasy series (one can only wish though). The only book in the series that I didn't particularly enjoy (at least as much as the rest of the books in the series) would have to be the third novel. However, it is still a really great series to pass the time, and still remains one of my favourite fantasy series to recommend. Mac and Jericho Barrons own my entire heart. Rating: 4.5/5 stars

4.

Lorien Legacy series by Pittacus Lore. The Lorien Legacies series was one of the first science fiction series I ever picked up. This series starts off with the first novel "I am Number Four" about a group of 10 alien kids forced to flee their planet due to a another alien species hunting their kind. I picked this series up around the same time that I was reading the Percy Jackson series. Although I didn't finish the entire series (I believe I stopped at The Fall of Five due to one of my favourite character's death) I still consider it to be one of my top 10 favourite fantasy/sci-fi series. Would recommend it 100%. Rating: 5/5 stars

5.

The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black. What can I say about this book that everybody else hasn't already said on tiktok, or one of those fantasy novel facebook groups. This Holly Black's series did not fail to disappoint. It takes place in one of my favourite fictional worlds, the fae world, and follows our very strong main female character, Jude and how she navigates the Fae court's politics, treachery, and scheming. I read this series as soon as it came out after seeing the buzz surrounding it, and immediately fell in love with it. It had everything that I needed: a strong FMC, an enemy to lovers plotline, takes place in the fae world, and great worldbuilding. I would recommend this book for lovers of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas, or fans of the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. Rating: 4.5/5 stars

6.

The Winner's Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. The Winner's Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski was one of my most pleasant reads of 2018. I went into this series thinking I was going to be underwhelmed, and everything that was promised would be underdelivered. However this book series did not disappoint, and it certainly did not underdeliver. I was all for the forbidden love/star-crossed lovers trope, but what was so great about this series was the detail and attention that went towards the worldbuilding. The polical motives and strategy was surprisingly fun to read about, and while it didn't have the usual fairies, magic and vampires that I usually enjoy in my fantasy series, I was still pleasantly entertained throughout the entirety of this series.  Rating: 4.5/5 stars

7.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout. You can read all my thoughts about this book in my book review posted here. I loved this book, although I went into it initially thinking I would hate it. The only thing I did not love about this series is the inconsistent/unclear worldbuilding, however I would still100% recommend to any lover of fantasy novels. Has magic, vampires, monsters and an enemies-lovers storyline. Rating: 4.5/5 stars
