Top 7 Literary Retellings
1.
Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. A Beauty and the Beast retelling! Who honestly doesn't love one of those? This novel is so beautifully written and the prose is in a league of its own. Most retellings just have elements of the original tales and deviate entirely from the original. While others pretty much do a word for word transcript of the original tale without bringing any originality to the table. This book had the best of both worlds. It deviates from the original tale for sure, but not so much that it is a completely new story. At the same time, while also having many of the elements that we love from the story of Beauty and the Beast. Can't recommend this book enough. Rating: 4.5/5 stars
2.
Lunar Chronicle series by Marissa Meyer. The entire Lunar Chronicles series is based on different fairy tale characters. The first book in the series is Cinder and it's a take on Cinderella but in a Sci-fi/Fantasy world. It's so very original and although I wouldn't really consider it a retelling (because it does its own take and veers away from the Cinderella story) it still has some easter eggs and aspects from the original Cinderella story. The other book in the series are Scarlett (based on Red Riding Hood and my personal favourite), Cress (based on Rapunzel) and Winter (based on Snow White). They're all intertwined and the plot is so intense and has many twists and turns that the series still resonates with me even though I read it 6 years ago. Rating: 4.5/5 stars
3.
Heartless by Marissa Meyer. Another Marissa Meyer retelling. If there is anything Marissa Meyer does well, it's retellings. This one is based on the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, and it's supposed to act as a villain origin story. Marissa Meyer did more than that though. I actually ended up feeling sorry for the Queen whose favourite past time is taking off people's heads. It is honestly so good, and one of my favourite retellings. Rating: 4/5 stars
4.
A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair. So the last few books I've recommended are more in the YA realm, but this one is NA fantasy and has some *steamy moments*. Probably wouldn't read it around children. It's a Hades and Persephone retelling and honestly one of the best ones out there. I've been trying for years to find a good Hades and Persephone retellings and most of them fall flat in both the greek mythology aspect and the romance aspect. This book encaptures both. I loved all the characters that were introduced (Hades being my favourite of course), and thought it was really well written. Would recommend it 100%. Ratiing: 5/5 stars
5.
Circe by Madeline Miller. Truthfully not much to say about this book. It was good but personally I didn't find it all that amazing. It's a retelling of Circe and really captures the Greek Mythology elements that I love so much, but I didn't find it remarkable. Circe was made to be sort of a tonal and boring FMC and I feel like that's why I couldn't really get into it. But I still thought it was a pretty mediocre read. Rating: 3/5 stars
6.
Hunted by Meagan Spooner. Hunted is another beauty and the beast retelling (I seem to love those ones), and although it wasn't as good as Cruel Beauty it was still really well written. I'm a sucker for anything beauty and the beast so it hit the spot for me. Read this a few years ago so can't really remember the details of it, but if you're in the mood for a beauty and the beast retelling and already read Cruel Beauty, then this would be the next one to start. Rating: 3.5/5 stars
7.
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh. This book was a pleasant surprise. After DNF'ing it two times, I finally caved into the hype it got and decided to read it. This time I made a promise I would actually get past page 25, and oh boy was I glad that I did. This book and Cruel Beauty are fighting for the spot in my heart of most well written retelling. This particular one is based on One Thousand Nights (you know, the one with Aladdin). I don't want to give too much away here because I plan on doing a whole separate and full review about this one, but it was an absolute pleasure to read. 100% recommend. Rating: 5/5 stars
